Kelty announces a voluntary recal of certain child carriers

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
Click Here to determine if your carrier has been recalled
Kelty, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is announcing a voluntary recall of certain child carriers that were sold after March 1, 1999 under one of the following names:

  • Town
  • Country
  • Elite
  • L.L.KIDS
  • Trek
  • Expedition
  • Explorer
Please note that none of the Kelty K.I.D.S. backpack child carriers subject to the recall/retrofit were shipped to our Canadian dealers.

Please download the PDF above and use the drawings as illustrated in Figures 1, 2, and 3 to help you determine if your carrier is one that is being recalled.

  • The seat height adjustment strap (see Figure 1) is located at the front of the child's seat. It allows you to find the seat level that is most comfortable for your child's height.
  • When you purchased your carrier from the retailer, the seat height adjustment strap looked like the Figure 2 illustration.
  • We have learned that slippage of the seat adjustment strap could occur if the consumer has unthreaded it and the strap is not doubled back through the 3-bar slider (see Figure 3.) A child can slide downward in the seat unexpectedly and could fall out of the carrier. We have received two reports of strap slippage. In neither instance did the child slip out of the carrier, nor have we received any reports of injury.
What you need to do
  • If you purchased a Kelty carrier after March 1, 1999 stop using your carrier immediately and check to see if it is recalled.
  • Compare your carrier's seat height adjustment strap with the Figure 2 illustration. If the strap has an end like the one shown in Figure 2, contact Kelty immediately at 1-800-423-2320. You will receive instructions on how to receive a free retrofit kit that will include new equipment and parts to prevent removal of the strap through the 3 bar-slider. Additional Information
    • Carriers with seat straps like those in Figure 4 have been bar tacked and stitched and are not involved in this recall. This bar tacking provides an additional safeguard against potential slippage of the child seat.
    • Carriers that were purchased from retailers prior to March 1, 1999 have a different type of seat adjustment strap (see Figure 5) and are
      not
      included in this recall.
