I was looking for a new backpack to replace my old Jansport (which has treated me well and lasted over 20 years). After doing an extensive search for a new pack, I came across the Kelty MAP 3500. It had all the key features I was looking for. So I decided to order one, (even though I prefer to try something on before purchasing).
As someone with a long torso, it is difficult to find a pack that fits comfortably. One of the selling points for this pack was the adjustable torso and the shoulder straps. Unfortunately, the straps turned out to be the Achilles' heel. I found the velcro attachments to be difficult to move, and the top end of the strap seems to be fabric covered cardboard. I think a better approach is have the straps secured to the pack and have a padded extender come off the bottom of the strap. Since the top of the straps hold the most weight, they should be padded and not just a hard velcro attachment.
Other issues I noticed are:
The adjustment straps. The diagonal stitching leaves a lot to be desired. The end of the strap should be sewn back onto itself with a cross stitch resembling an X. Or better yet, use finger ring pull tabs. This would make the straps more user friendly, and they won't cut into your clothing.
The elastic pulls on the external mesh pockets are not designed well. When the cord is tightened the loose end dangles too much. Having the pull cord in the middle, allows the rim of the pocket to tighten evenly, and would reduce the amount of excess cord dangling about.
I am also not a fan of the stretch criss-cross on the front. A couple of compression straps would work just as well, if not better (My Jansport has two compression straps across the front, and they are great for a travel pillow, extra pair of shoes, hat, or even a rain jacket). Some of the other new packs are adding an overflow pocket, which would work for all the items listed above and maybe even a bike helmet.
Last item I noticed is the fleece pocket opens downward. I would prefer the opening be on top, so expensive electronics don't fall out.
Overall, I am highly disappointed with this pack. I am returning it, and continuing my search for a new pack.

I have used this extensively for periods of a day to multi day activity. It has held up well and still looks good!
I like the thought that was put into the organization of this bag, it works. It's light yet durable, the perfect combination.

I purchased this pack to replace my 10 year old Kelty Zephyr and it does an absolutely amazing job. The internal aluminum frame can be custom tailored to fit YOUR frame. It is extremely comfortable and highly adjustable. I only wished it had MOLLE. I look forward to trying to wear this one out in the next 10 years.
