Have you ever wanted to stargaze but could only see a sliver of the sky through the top of your tent? Well no more, the Trail Ridge 4 incorporates an innovative configuration that enables the walls to remain steep to provide an amazing amount of interior space. When the Trail Ridge is used without a fly, the majority of the shell is mesh so watching the stars at night will be stellar!

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW I replaced one of the doors with all mesh. It was quite labor intensive. I had to glue mesh to the fabric, glue binding tape to both sides, and then double stitch the binding tape all around. This project took a couple of days. The new door has improved the tent 100%. I can now see outside and the ventilation is much better. It would be even better with two mesh doors. ORIGINAL REVIEW I like this tent except for a couple of things. First the pros. This is one of the smaller 4P tents you can buy, which is one reason I bought it. I use it for one person with a cot and it's the perect size for that use. The shape is great---very roomy at the top, straight sides all around. Very easy to set up even for one person. There are two cons. The first is the color scheme, which I find quite unattractive. A neutral light green would be much better. I resisted buying this tent or any current Kelty because of the color. The second serious problem is the solid fabric door. ***Most of the U.S. has gotten blazing hot and humid over the last decade.*** Air flow is much, much more important to me than privacy. The solid doors really do block the air flow. Opening the fly door is the only way to create air flow, but that ony works with mesh doors in the main body. The small mesh windows at the top of the door does virtually nothing for the air flow. With the fly on, this tent is very hot and humid. That could be rectified by making the doors all mesh. If we want privacy we can close the fly door. A second problem with the fabric door is that you have no view outside. I go camping in part to see the woods and lakes outside my tent, not to mention checking things moving around my campsite in the middle of the night. With all-mesh doors and a light green color this tent would be just about perfect. I own the TR2 and used to own the TR3. Those two tents have all-mesh doors and are wonderful tents, better and cheaper than anything else on the market. Plus they are just about the largest 2P and 3P tents you can buy. So what's the logic behind the fabric panel on the 4P??

I love the design and the size is just right. I wanted to comment on the door. I have had a couple of REI Basecamp 4 tents that I loved (except for the fly material and quality) but anyhow. The REI door was half solid and half mesh. You the mesh part though also had a way to zip it closed - covering it with a layer of solid material. This combo was GREAT. You could close it all up when it was cold or open it up the top half and see out. I would often open the fly and open the top of the door and sit inside and read when the weather was too cold. I wish this tent did this. I bought this tent however because it did have the solid door.REI has changed their tent to an all screen door. The problem with thes taller tents with large vestibules and an all screen door is that it can be very drafty through the door. The large vestibules don't hold in warm air. I used the REI door's zippered screen cover to regulate the temperature of the tent. It was a perfect design. Good from hot to very cold areas. So I guees it depents on where you camp and the temps as to whether or not you want a solid or screen door. In California, I camp when its 35 to 120, so I need some versitility.

Love this tent! I took it out for a trail run this weekend and was amazed at how quickly set up went. I am 58 years old and have not camped in almost 30 years. I was by mysel as my husband couldn't go and I had this baby up in under ten minutes.

I've used many tents. This one corners the market for car camping. It is very waterproof but well ventilated for reducing condensation. It is roomy and well built. The gear ledge is very functional and with it installed there is still plenty of headroom. I love this tent and would recommend it to anyone. Most bang for you buck in a 3 season 3-4 person tent. The full rain-fly works well in the PNW continuous light drizzle. Setup is great with clips and no sleeves. I looked for all these qualities in a tent and this one had it all. I can't say enough. Get one and you won't be sorry.

Let me start by saying I work in the outdoor industry at a technical outfitter. I am exposed to the very best of the best that the industry has to offer on a daily basis. I purchased this tent for a few reasons... 1. Price. You can spend hundreds more on a tent of comparable features and weight, performance, etc. Why? The name? Save yourself some money and get this tent. 2. Full rain fly. I purchased this tent for my family for the express purpose of car camping. I have two small children (under 3) and our first trip with the tent was VERY wet. It rained for 5 straight days and the temp dipped to freezing for multiple nights. We stayed bone dry and had plenty of head room for changing...not standing. Being a person with extensive backcountry experience, I know how important it is to stay dry. It was cold and wet and my kids were warm and dry...thank you, Kelty. 3. Clips! There are no sleeves to put the poles through! If you have the option to get a tent with no sleeves, then do it! It started raining when we got to our campsite and setup was so quick and easy because of the clips. We had it up in 90 seconds. No problems. 4. I wanted to give Kelty a chance over "high end" brands because the prices being charged for comparable tents is ridiculous. Many in the outdoor industry would tell you that Kelty isn't "the best" brand. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it is the best, and I'm not saying it isn't. There are sooo many "brand snobs" out there so be careful and don't get talked into something you don't actually need. Bottom line... this is a great tent for car camping enthusiasts or if you're going to use it as a base camp shelter for multiple days and day hike from a centralized location. Get won't be sorry. Don't forget the footprint! It will save the bottom of your tent and is a needed moisture barrier!
