I regularly try new packs from every manufacturer out there. Continually searching for a pack which can rival Kelty's external frames when it comes to comfort, load bearing, organization, durability, and functionality. Still haven't found one. The Yukon and Trekker are as good as it gets with organization and access of gear. Love how you can separate items like ammo, first aid kit, fishing gear, etc. When you want to get to it, you don't have to dig through the pack. It is hydration compatible, but for people like me who prefer bottles there is a deep pocket which easily and securely holds my 40oz stainless steel canteen. The external frame provides structure, support, and keeps the weight off your back. The load is effectively transferred to your hips allowing for comfortable balance and posture. It's an excellent platform for lashing other gear to. There is a sleeping bag compartment large enough to accommodate even a synthetic filled bag, but I don't often use it for that. I strap my sleeping bag and tent (wrapped in my pad) to the outside. This leaves me 3000 cu in of internal space for the rest of my gear. The fit of the pack is highly adjustable. It's often used for boy scouts because the torso length can be adjusted down and the load bearing capability is so good. However this pack is very functional for adults. It could literally be used for an entire lifespan. Durability on mine is rock solid. The materials and workmanship throughout the pack are robust. Unlike most packs, it's easily serviceable. The shoulder straps and lumbar belt are easily replaceable. Though after 7 years and several hundred miles mine are still in fantastic shape. The pack can be removed from the frame for cleaning. The Yukon is also hard to match for ease of use. Doesn't required much special consideration when packing or unpacking. Doesn't require a bunch of straps to secure a load. Easy to take on and off. Easy to adjust. Once you get it dialed in to your fit, it's a simple matter of tightening/ loosening the the belt and should straps when you put it on and take it off. Now, what are the drawbacks? The packs are wider than internal frames. This keeps the weight near your body, but does prevent some extra potential for snagging on branches in dense foliage. A rain cover mitigates this to an extent. The slight separation from your back allows airflow, but means they aren't quiet as secure as tight fitting internal frame packs during vigorous movement. This design has been around for a long time and copied by others for a reason. It's not flashy or high tech, but it is one of the best packs ever made. One of the best choices available to date. Also, an excellent value.

Very comfortable bag. I could fit so much into it and could lash tons of stuff on the frame. Great first bag. Very well designed with strong zippers and straps all around!!

Just picked this pack up to become my new primary external frame pack. The pack is very well designed and as usual the craftsmanship is top notch. The only issue I have with this pack is simply because I'm a quite large person at 6'3"/275lbs, the shoulder straps would be more comfortable if they were 2" or so longer in the padded sections. Other than this I'm really liking this pack!

This is my second and they are great packs. The only real change from my old one to the new is no compression strap holes on top or bottom.Daisy chain instead
