Great bag, I got this about 3 months ago and have used it on a 6 day trek in the lower (16000 ft. region) Himalayas, and on several 5 day treks in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The pack has held up to all the hype I read about it. the layout is very well thought out, I like the new integrated brain pocket to store goodies in, as well as the pass through on either side of the bag (under the side pockets through to the mesh pockets) this is great for tent poles and other longer items. The side pockets are big enough to store a nalgene or a neoair thermorest sleeping pad which is very convenient. I have had this thing loaded down with probably more than 50 lbs. It isn't the most comfortable pack weighed down. The metal bar has dug into my back at times. It takes a good bit of time to adjust to be comfortable. But without all that weight it is much better. I also really like the dual daisy chain on the bottom of the pack, its a great place to carry a sleeping pad. I got the M/L 50 L. and I am 5'10" 175 lbs and a 33" waist and the hip belt gets fully tightened down when i wear it. This pack is great for 3-4 day treks or a great travel bag. I love the layout so much, I am going to purchase the Redwing 32L.

I recently bought this bag and wanted to come on here to answer some of the questions i had and could not find the answers to before the purchase so here they are. The hip straps ARE removable. There are NO holes in the metal zipper to lock them aside from using the strings attached. The metal spine IS removable. There is also a hard plastic backing to this that IS also removable, however if you take the metal spine out as i did this is very handy to still have in as it keeps the packs structure. CONTRARY to what Kelty say, The Regular rain cover will fit a fully loaded Med/Large pack completely, almost perfectly. (however if you intend to attach more things to the outside of the pack it will not fit. You can finesse the straps so that they don't stick out and dangle so much as well if you plan to be throwing this on a lot of trains and planes. All that said, i purchased this pack for a backpacking trip through some countries and had read that it was only a 2-3 day pack. Well, i don't know what people are putting into their packs for 3 days but i fit a solid weeks worth of clothing in here with extra socks, tanks, and undies taboot! not to mention all the other amenities you would take ( thin raincoat, pack raincover, camera, power converters, cologne, locks, toothpaste.etc.) and i still had some room to spare for a souvenir or shirt to bring back. I wrote this 'book' in hopes of alleviating the concerns of anyone else who is thinking of buying this pack but like me wanted more info before spending the money!! Its a great - and roomy- pack!

This Redwing replaces my circa 1998 Redwing which went with me everywhere. Eventually, things wear out. That said, i do miss the front interior pocket with zippered compartment. That little detail gets one demerit. Being able to secure small items, coins, jewelry, etcetera to the pack is important. The little pockets are nice, but since I don't always keep my bag in the upright position, coins and small metallic items go all over the place. I do like the new design better in that the side pockets are "flatter" in profile compared to the older design. I love the fact this barely passes the overhead compartment specs provided you don't overstuff the pack. The ideal pack in my mind would be a slightly larger Flyway, which I would buy in a second if it were made.

I bought this pack for my 20 year old daughter that loves to hike with me. She is a small girl (5'3" 115 lbs), so we had to be careful to get a pack that was not too big. This fits her well except in the waist where it could actually be a bit smaller. We are constantly amazed at the durability of our Kelty packs. This is one tough pack and we are convinced it will last a long time. It has lots of pockets for organization and even has the ability to strap things on outside of the pack like on top or bottom. She often carries her Thermarest on top. She loves the pocket for a hydration bladder, which I also have on my Redcloud 90. It is so nice to get a drink without having to awkwardly reach around and pull a Nalgene out of a side pocket. She has used this pack for traveling as well as hiking. It is stylish and a perfect size for that purpose as well so this gets double use. She loves it. I am tempted to get one for me as i don't always need the size of the Redcloud 90.

Great pack. LIKES: price, capacity, color options, material, weight, side pockets with pass-behind sleeves, new top loading ability. DISLIKES: aluminum stay hits my spine when I bend over since it's in the center of the pack, and the overall look; a little too pod-like/jelly-bean'ish and more feminine than than past designs. Wish it looked a little more 'manly.'

Great organization. It's hard to find a pack this awesome with both organization and capacity. I love the option of it being top & panel loading. Kelty did an awesome job on this design. The pack is also very comfortable.

This is the best backpack I own, well, along with my Coyote 80. I bought this pack for trips of short duration, 3 days or less. Couldn't have made a better decision. The Redwing is a well thought out design allowing its users quick access to their gear. The front panel loading design opens like a suitcase allowing you to find gear quickly without having to dig thru the pack like a top loader. The Redwing also has 4 outside zippered pockets and two stretch pockets where you can access gear you need quickly without having to open the main compartment. The large front zippered pocket has organizational features in which you can separate the gear you choose to store in it. Like I said it is a well designed pack that promises quick access to gear and ease of use. There are also outside attachment points on the pack that will accommodate additional gear you wish to take along with you, like trekking poles, tent poles, and or fishing poles. The side pockets also have a slide behind sleeve in which you can carry longer items that will not fit inside the pack and need to be carried in an upright position as to not catch onto anything on your side. The Redwing is also a very durable backpack made with quality materials that will give its users years of good service. Like all Kelty backpacks it has the users in mind providing quality and features of packs costing twice as much. I definitely recommend this pack to anyone needing a pack for short duration trips.

I like the top pocket of the new design. Yes, I miss that interior pocket on the old model but I can fit a lot more stuff into the new one. Sleek, clean design and access to all of my contents with the new zipper design is nice, too. Comfortable straps and the fit is perfect for me. Holds a ton of stuff but it doesn't feel like a ton. If it had loops for trekking poles I'd give it another star, although the pass-thru behind the side pockets works, too. Above-average for a daypack or just big enough as an overniter. Nicely done.
