  1. High Quality Construction; Condensation depends on conditions

Kelty's Classic Bivy is made quite well and provides plenty of space for one person to sleep inside - a bit over 20 square feet - that's a larger footprint than some solo tents. It packs small and is reasonably light. The "bathtub" portion of the material is high quality and rugged for tent material.

The challenge for all bivy tents, however, is condensation, and all manufacturers must strike a balance between breathability and waterproofness. It seems that Kelty chose to be more waterproof, as the lighter grey upper layer (which presumably is more breathable) does not extend to the feet, where it might well be most useful for venting moisture. That said, you could use this bivy in very wet conditions with confidence.

A breeze helps mitigate condensation tremendously, as does dry air outside the bivy. If it is humid outside with no breeze, condensation is very likely, so bear that limitation in mind. I have used this bivy in the southeastern US and experienced both minimal moisture (on a breezy night) and significant moisture (with no breeze). I do carry it as emergency shelter when hiking in the mountains.

  2. Great Deal!

This simply designed bivy is a straightforward best deal. It's light, versatile, and very reasonably priced. The flip top zipper gives me enough room to place my sleeping mat and bag, to get in and out, and keep a roof over my head anywhere, anytime.
No wonder Kelty earns Outside Magazine's Best Gear award for its camping gear -- this year for its TN-series tents. Best value, durable materials, quality construction, and best price.
    Way to go, Kelty!

  3. Customer Review

The generously sized bivy I've always wanted. Packs to 10" long by 5" diameter, and provides plenty of room inside when rolled out for pad, bag, extra clothing and other items, and room to move around. A good item for summer camping in drier environs to provide protection from passing nightime showers and dewfall... on May 7th 2014
