Right out of the box (bag) I took the Sal-2 on a 7-day solo ski tour (Mar/Apr 2018), did my first setup on the snow--no instructions necessary--easy to figure out! Pole clamps ('Hug Clips') are ingenious. I often camp on ridges/mtn tops so generally experience plenty of wind, 25-35mph CONSTANT one night.
Enough room for one + gear, and length is acceptable for sleeping, though a few more inches would be nice to prevent bag/tent contact.
I only use a fly for rain, so for me--too much breeze through the tent/mesh (used fly for extra under-bag insulation).
After hours of searching online/brick-mortar stores, I finally settled on this model--nobody yet makes the design I need.
This tent replaced the $19.95 (sale from $39.95) el cheapo surplus version that has been incredibly reliable through multiple ski tours (2 week), 10-day desert hikes, up to 200mi Spring/Summer BP/Climbing trips, week-long kayak tours, car camping... Their pros/cons balance each other out for value--I'd still be just as happy/secure w/El Cheapo. The EC has been *completely* flattened by winds--no problemo--fiberglass poles; can't see the aluminum enduring such stress.
Why the unusual 'stuff sack'?
MANY thanks to those before me who have provided reviews!--you know who you are! Unknown on Apr 7th 2018
Perfect for backpacking trips. Unknown on Mar 27th 2018
Fast pitch, no frills tent. Light-ish, can't beat the weight to price ratio. Spent a 15 degree night and not a drop of condensation in the morning. Held heat well, blocked wind. No rain this trip but I have every confidence I'd have been dry if it did. Little cramped for two full sized adults but I bet it could be done comfortably (provided you're super good friends and the gear stays in the vestibule). Happy Camper on Jan 3rd 2018
there are many lightweight tents out there, but this is a great one if youre on a budget. I am very happy with this tent! i did some research beforehand and am happy i ended up choosing the salida 2. quality is great, and it is very lightweight. not a huge fan of the square storage bag, but everything fits well. no issues with poles. I bought this tent during a Kelty sale and have used it several times backpacking during shoulder seasons in the Sierras. Easy and simple to set up, no gimmicks. I like the solid material in the lower sections for privacy and it resists splashback & wind during inclement weather. The poles aren't cheap & flimsy and are short enough to pack down nicely. Light enough to carry as a solo tent with plenty of room for my dog inside also (60 lb. Husky). I stake out the rainfly completely for ventilation and haven't had a problem with condensation. It would be nice if Kelty included paracord line for the ventilation loops on the rainfly, but it's cheap to buy.
I also bought the footprint and a gearloft, but haven't needed the loft since there is a loop overhead to hang a nightlight. The bright cream color doesn't get hot in the sun and is pleasant to wake up to in the morning.
It came with nobendium stakes which was nice, but they only work in softer soil.
Overall it's a nice tent at a great price! Hans on Oct 8th 2017
I purchased this tent for use when I volunteer with a trail crew on the Appalachian Trail. I am not a serious backpacker but do enjoy spending a few weeks a year on the trail with other volunteers both maintaining the trail and building new trail. I knew little about tents but learned quickly on my first trip that a one man tent is really just a fantasy in that if you are larger than a small child you will likely suffer greatly during you journey. I replaced my one man tent with this Salida 2 and am quite pleased with it. It is very easy to set up and stake out and is roomy, even when I brought all of my gear into the tent with me. The vestibule is large enough for pack and boots but I opted to bring it all inside. It rained considerably during my week but the tent stayed dry except for a minimal amount of condensation and some moisture near the bottom which I plan to take care of when I add additional waterproofing, which is something I understand needs to be done occasionally with all tents. My backpacks are Kelty as well as my sleeping bags. Fine products all and I recommend this company and it products. I will note that there was a reasonable hike to our camp and the weight of this tent is very reasonable. I would have given 5 stars but I don't give anything 5 stars. Nothing is perfect. Nice, roomy tent; at the right price. Good weight to size ratio, quality materials as far as durability. I had a pole crack after some use and Kelty in a super fast manner, received the item, fixed it at their Alabama repair center facility, and shipped it back for free. A personal customer service note was included from the repairing technician, Kathy. I was truly pleased with Kelty's warranty service (no questions asked) and the fact that the item was fixed and processed for repair in the U.S. with outstanding customer service. I will surely continue buying their products for myself, friends, and family. This is an example that all companies should aspire to! Many thanks Kelty and especially Kathy in AL! I was very pleasantly surprised how quickly my Salida 2 set up in the rain and stayed dry. Rained solid all night, and no condensation. I'm a big fellow so all that living space and ventilation were terrific. The loft was a terrific feature. I bought the older Salida 2. Tons of room to spare. Gary on Jul 12th 2016
