I owned one of the original mocking birds. I purchased it in 1982 and used for 15 years...right up till it was stolen...brilliant little day-pack…and this new one takes me back to my original…looking forward to 15 years with the new one

I use this pack every day. Great for getting groceries home if you are a cyclist. There seems to always be more room. 12 pack of beer fits like a glove! I also took this to Japan for a month hopping hostels from Tokyo to Shiretoko in Hokkaido and the to the top of Mt. Rausu. With the side pockets attached I managed while my traveling partner had a 70L bag and ended up bringing way to much stuff. Good pack get one.

Amazingly well build and design is so retro-awesome that anyone would look good using it. It's perfect for a camping overnighter when you really don't need the bulk or weight of a full hiking backpack. The large side pockets will stash away all the extras you'll need. One key factor is the zippers are heavy construction and will last for a long, long time. Well worth the money.

I still use this pack I originally bought sometime around 1978. I've had to sew up a few of the seams and lost the side pockets but it's been all through the Rockies and Sierras, not to mention alot of greyhound busses. I just wish some of my cars and wives lasted as long.

If you miss the simple but functional design of a rucksack, then this is the backpack for you. There's a point where more pockets and more compression straps just become more hassle. (My son's N**** F*** backpack has so many pockets, including pockets within pockets, that it takes us 5 minutes just to find his gloves.) I really like the way the shoulder straps are secured with clevis pins and split rings. This allows the straps to conform to the width of my shoulders without twisting. I commend Kelty's designers for not using a single long wire to secure both clevis pins. It was too easy to strip the single wire from the clevis pins if the end of the wire wasn't taped shut with duct tape. I've gained a few pounds over the years, so the waist strap could be longer. I'd like the strap to fit over my 36" waist and rainjacket. The leather lashing points for the removable side pockets are single-layer split leather, so stretching under load could become a problem if it rains. While full-grain leather would be overkill, Kelty designers may want to consider sewing two layers of split leather together like they did at the shoulder straps. The metal zippers are great - just like the ones on my old Kelty Expedition (except all the Mockingbird's zipper seams are taped so the zipper won't snag them).

I just recently took this pack to Central America and carried it with me for 10 days. The pack is great, easy to organize, and comfortable to wear. One thing I really liked about it, given where I was traveling, was that it's retro design is very subdued compared to modern packs. That meant that as a tourist, I didn't stand out as much--which is a good thing when you travel!
