I am former military (US Army) and have used many different packs. I own and use a redwing 44 and a Lakota 85 for all of my trips into the north cascades of Washington state. The internal ibeam makes these packs the most compfortable packs I have ever used. I pack them to the max and hardly realize it in the mountains.

for the gripers: the waist belt is easily removable. just go inside the top of the pack and temporarily pull the frame spine out about 6 inches. at the bottom corners of the pack, tuck the thin straps attached to the belt through their bindings. the belt slides right out. slide the spine back down.

Go to pack, any time our family goes out on a hike this pack goes with us. it is large enough to carry water bottles for all of us and anything else we will need. the aluminum frame that the pack uses really holds the load. On a hike my little one just decided not to walk anymore so i threw her on my shoulders, and the pack took most of her weight, so my 35lbs baby wasn't as heavy.

Picked this pack up for my day pack during many events. Today, I was climbing Mt. Elbert (14,433) in Colorado. As a assistant scout master, I tend to carry a lot just in case something happens with me or the boys. This pack held and organized everything I needed to take and because of the awesome waist belt with the external bar going up the middle I hardly knew I was carrying a lot of weight. Then came the real rough part! My son needed help with his weight load so I strapped his backpack to my Kelty. Worked like a charm! I carried both packs from 13,000 ft elevation to 14,000+ without issue. I guess a Kelty employee was hiking the same mountain and asked me if I liked my pack. I truly enjoy it and it is well worth it! 100% satisfied.

Great pack. I agree that the non removable belt was a dumb move. I love that feature on my older Redwing 50. I use this pack for day to day life and have no use for a bulky waist belt. I cut it off. One other minor gripe is that the pouch for the hydration bladder is a bit tight as well as the drinking tube opening. I really have to cram it in. I love the new deeper mesh pockets on the sides. Huge improvement over the older versions. Another good pack by Kelty.

I was really excited to get this pack since I owned the prior year's model and needed a second pack. After I received the pack and unpacked it, I saw the new features that were presented and immediately was saddened. They removed front vertical zipper pocket that was handy. They also removed the pouch inside the front flap that was a good stow away spot. These are miniscule issues compared to the fact that now the waist belt can not be removed. This is very inconvenient because as a student walking around campus I do not need the waist belt hitting me or others as I walk. Also I do not want to attach the belt to travel between classes. On the bright side I do like the color, the top pocket, and the new entry system for the main compartment. In closing I am upset at all the changes, but will still use the pack because it is still functional.

I agree with everything john said. my only complaint is your choice to go the cheap route with the silk screened logo/redwing 44 graphics rather than stitching. loss of a star for that.

Spectacular pack, really, really well thought out, well executed, quality materials throughout. I love the new design of the Redwing. The ability to load from the top, or not, the pass-thru's behind the upper side pockets, the ingenious lower compression system design, the reliably flawless, you folks nailed it! No nonsense. All common sense. No, I wouldn't change a thing about this pack. You're going to sell a lot of 'em. Good job everyone!
