My dad passed down his old external frame pack to me a few years back and lets just say the old straps were not going to cut it! I had to add pin holes in the frames upper crossmember to accommodate the new load lifters for the new straps but works perfect now. Also had to rob and old pack for a couple slip buckles to finish out the load lifters. There is a reason why external frame packs have been around so long and now-a-days with lighter gear they are even better! John Paul on Sep 12th 2018
I took my first backpack trip into Glacier National Park when I was 17 with my Kelty frame pack. I’m now 62 and was amazed how Kelty kept up with improvements on my Shoulder straps. Makes for a comfortable pack at my age. Thanks Kelty! And your service is outstanding. BTW straps were easy to change out worn old ones. Unknown on Sep 2nd 2018
I needed replacement straps for a vintage 1970 external backpack. Phil answered all my questions promptly and professionally. I am very impressed that I could find replacement straps for the pack I love.

The replacement padded shoulder straps fit like a glove. Good thing I had extra clevis pins because Kelty did not send the two(2) as specified. I had read other customers had the same experience, so I expected them not to arrive. Should just take it out of the item description all together. Steven Quincey on Aug 17th 2018
Fit perfectly on my 1960's Kelty B4 external frame back along with the matching Trekker 65 hipbelt.

I purchased these in hopes that I could replace the shoulder straps for my old Camp Trails external frame backpack. It worked like a champ for the most part.
Swapping them out was easy and they fit just fine. There's so much more padding than the original and the inclusion of the sternum strap will really help with comfort. Not to mention that these are contoured as opposed to the old straight straps. I tried it on with no load and I can already tell the difference.
The only thing missing from the camp trails pack was the buckles to implement the load lifter straps (not a fault of Kelty at all). But, I cut off the nylon buckles from the original shoulder straps (or the belt, I can't remember which as I replaced both) and then made a new set. I used 3/8" grommets and pounded those through some left over nylon strap. I then pinned them in place using the original shoulder strap pin.
The only thing left to make is a lifting strap (which was part of the old shoulder straps); I plan to use the original one. I just have to get some screws or pins to hold it in place but it's not a big deal.
These straps are totally worth the minimal cost for updating an old framed backpack. Ed in San Diego on Jul 27th 2018
New straps are a good functional replacement for the original upper straps other than color- black vs Kelty green. Problem is the lower strap- they don’t provide one. And the plastic strap fittings don’t fit the original steel- finished cotton straps. My short term solution is to cut the steel ends off (now no longer whipped). We’ll see how it works. They should supply the whole kit. Jack kelly on Jul 23rd 2018
The shoulder straps and hip belt worked out well. It would have been nice to have added a couple of pins for the external pack frame. For the price it was a decent deal. I would get it again! Unknown on Mar 16th 2018
I pulled my two vintage Kelty backpacks out of storage when my grandson joined a Boy Scout backpacking troop. With some cleaning they were good as new except the foam in the shoulder straps had hardened with age.
After checking with all of the usual sporting goods stores with no results, a salesperson suggested I check the Kelty website. The Trekker straps were a perfect replacement - easy to install with some minor cutting of the old lower strap to remove the metal tip so it could thread through the new lower buckle. The clevis pins are not included, so keep your old ones, which are compatible with the new straps. Unknown on Mar 1st 2018
I have a vintage (circa 70s) REI external frame pack and my treasured possession--a vintage Alpenlite external frame (also circa 70s). The latter has the patented stand up design that Alpenlite perfected. The REI pack belt finally gave out on the Lost Coast. The Alpenlite was just getting stiff and brittle.
I purchased the Trekker 65 replacement Shoulder Straps and Hip Belt for both packs. I purchased the Mesh Back for the REI pack. The components fit the REI pack like they were made for it. It is now better than ever. I had to angle the mounting portion of the Hip Belt on the Alpenlite as the frame design is different, but I was easily able to make it work. I was even able to add stub straps to the top frame of both and connect the load leveling straps from the Trekker 65 harness. This is a feature I never had on these packs and a great improvement.
The price, functionality and quality of these Kelty straps absolutely saved two of my favorite all packs. They will outlive me now.
On both orders, I did not immediately receive the clevis pins and rings. However, I called in to Kelty both times and they immediately sent them to me--no questions asked.
Kelty is a great company and I am so glad they continue to put out external frames and the components for them. RickB on Feb 21st 2018
